Although in the past years, Vietnam's marine economy achieved encouraging achievements, the development process had a lot of risks and challenges such as: causing environmental pollution in the coastal region; Waste pollution, especially plastic waste, was becoming an urgent issue. Therefore, in order to make Vietnam a strong sea country, basically meet the criteria of sustainable marine economic development; forming marine ecological culture; proactively responding to climate change and tide; preventing trends of pollution, degradation of the marine environment, erosion; restoring and conserving important marine ecosystems, ... from 2009 up to now, every year Vietnam organizes activities in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, with many practical activities taking place in June. This year, the theme of Vietnam Sea and Islands Week is: "Renovating for a sustainable development of Vietnam's maritime economy" with the purpose of renewing the work of elaborating and implementing plans of Ministries, branches and localities aiming to concretize the contents of the Government's Resolution No. 26 / NQ-CP dated March 5, 2020 on the plan to implement Resolution No. 36-NQ / TW dated October 22, 2018 of the Party Central Committee on the strategy of sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, vision to 2045.

Thai Binh has more than 50 km of coastline, 4 large estuaries, many wide beaches and tens of thousands of square kilometers of territorial waters, creating favorable conditions for the combined exploitation of marine resources. In the past years, in order to achieve the goal of sustainable development and prevention and mitigation of environmental pollution in the coastal and coastal areas of the province, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with other related departments, agencies and units. The People's Committee of coastal districts advised the provincial People's Committee to carry out specific tasks, programs and projects such as propagating and disseminating legal provisions on natural resources of the sea and islands through various forms; hang banners, panels, posters with propaganda slogans, hold a rally, launch ceremony for practical and specific activities on protecting marine environmental resources ... on the occasion of Vietnam Sea and Island Week, World Ocean Day under the guidance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Organizing a map exhibition and display of documents affirming Vietnam's sovereignty over Truong Sa and Hoang Sa Islands. In addition, coastal localities have promoted the integration of solutions to use marine resources and conserve marine biodiversity into local socio-economic development programs; development of fishing and aquaculture; strictly handling those who are committed to acts of fishing with destructive means, depleting aquatic resources and destroying marine ecosystems.

Environmental sanitation of Vanh beach (Tien Hai).

In response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, World Oceans Day this year, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in collaboration with the People's Committee of Tien Hai District organize activities on environmental sanitation, garbage collection along the sea bank of Nam Thinh commune. Along with that, the Department advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue documents directing the organization of activities such as: extensive propaganda to all levels, branches, organizations and individuals in the area on World Oceans Day and other activities in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2020 with specific actions such as organizing hygiene for agencies, units and public places; propagating about the strategic role and position of Vietnam's sea and islands in the cause of national construction and defense; improve responsibility in the management, exploitation, use, protection and sustainable development of marine and island’s environmental resources; hanging banners, propaganda posters under the guidance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment at main roads, public places, agencies and units in order to change the perception of people and the community to protect the ocean, deal with climate change.
