Thai Binh: New direction from development of green agriculture and circular agriculture

 

 

 “Promoting modern agriculture, clean agriculture, and organic agriculture associated with the development of agricultural product processing industry, adaptation to climate change, and sustainable connection of value chains inside and outside the province and globally, creating momentum and bringing new breakthroughs in the agricultural sector of the province”. This is one of the targets of Thai Binh province in the period of 2021-2025 in order to develop a green, circular and sustainable agriculture.

Diversifying circular agriculture models

From simple circular economic ecological development linkage models such as garden - pond - cage (VAC), in recent years, people have improved them to suit the development of agriculture and protect human health and protect the environment, typically the model of garden - pond - cage - bioga (VACB). This model is applied by many families, farm owners, and ranchers in the production and business process.

The model of raising frogs on top and anabas on the bottom in Dong Cuong commune (Dong Hung) helps farmers reduce food costs and protect the water environment.

Especially, in the field of farming, the whole province has about 200 ha of favorable cultivation land with high economic value, creating ecological balance and biodiversity such as: high-quality rice production model combined with clam worm raising in Thuy Viet, Hong Dung, and Thuy Ninh communes (Thai Thuy); organic rice growing model combined with exploiting and developing natural fiddler crab resources to create a 3-layer ecological agriculture model (rice, fiddler crab and areca-nut) in Binh Thanh commune (Kien Xuong). In addition, in the province there are also ecological production models of 3-layer orchards, creating high income value and beautiful landscape in the countryside with many forms of cultivation (areca-nut, polyscias fruticosa, bantam), (jackfruit, tea, honey bee), (jackfruit, polyscias fruticosa, bantam), (areca-nut, lychee, honey bee)... or model of rice cultivation - mushroom cultivation - organic fertilizer production - fruit tree cultivation...

For breeding field, the whole province has over 18,000 biogas works for treating the breeding waste. Many large-scale breeding farms have used big biogas works (from 30m3 to 200 m3) installed continuously or built biogas lakes made of HDPE plastic tarpaulin with a volume of over 2,000 m3 for thorough treatment of breeding waste; at the same time, creating biogas sources for cooking and running generators, it both brings economic efficiency and reduces gas emission into the environment. In addition, the model of raising black soldier flies as raw materials for producing feed, combining the breeding and growing of green vegetables of An Dong Company (Hung Ha) brings high economic efficiency and is environmentally friendly, creates a quality, safe food source... In addition, the models of raising anabas - frog - rice, frog - anabas in some localities in the province have brought high economic efficiency, saved materials, feed, and not polluted the water or air environment...

Along with the models above, there are some models such as: model of raising bees for honey in mangrove forest, bee by-products will be used as organic fertilizer for plants; model of growing Biomass corn is a source of supply raw materials to make food and bedding for buffalo and cow raising, and buffalo and cow waste is used as organic fertilizer; general production model of raising cow/pig - Perionyx excavatus - corn - poultry - fish; model of growing mulberry trees - raising silkworms - producing organic fertilizer... also brings benefits of reusing agricultural waste as fertilizer; at the same time, taking advantage of available raw materials for safer, cleaner production, mitigating the greenhouse gas emissions, bringing high economic efficiency.

Transition to low carbon agriculture

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, Vice Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: Thai Binh province has clearly identified that a low carbon economy is a new direction and an opportunity for the locality to improve the competitiveness of the agriculture in the global sustainable agricultural value chain. Many localities in the province have been forming the models of applying science and technology, technical procedures for fuel-saving farming to operate agricultural machinery, and limit the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment. Typically, there is a typical SRI rice cultivation model in Dong Hung, Vu Thu, Tien Hai, Kien Xuong and Thai Thuy districts. This model applies SRI farming techniques, planting wide rows, narrow rows, creating conditions for rice to have the highest photosynthetic ability, the rice plants are healthy, have good resistance to pests and diseases... or a model of using Sumitri, Azotobacter finished products for straw treatment after harvest. The target of the models is to minimize the dangers due to abuse of chemicals, especially pesticides, for public health, environment and food safety.

Particularly in the period of 2017-2020, with the cooperation of the Dutch development organization (SNV), the participation of agricultural businesses inside and outside the province, and the consensus of the people, the localities have implemented successfully the project “Sustainable rice production and greenhouse gas emissions reduction (AVERP)”, in which 52 communes with 54 cooperatives of 8 districts and city in the province participated in applying the technology package of the units with an applied area of 2,356.65 ha (2020). In general, 9 technology packages which have been implemented had an average productivity increasing by 26% and greenhouse gas emissions reducing by 12.5% compared to traditional farming methods, they were highly appreciated by people for the efficiency of the project.

Up to now, 100% of agricultural land area in the province has been proactively irrigated and drained; in which more than 146 ha of terrestrial crop areas is applied advanced water-saving irrigation methods (local spraying irrigation, rain and mist spraying irrigation, drip irrigation and economical irrigation in net houses and greenhouses).

In addition, some businesses have experimented the performance of model of using drones to spray pesticides, using unmanned plows in land preparation that run entirely on batteries; applying advanced technology to aquaculture and farming by 4.0 technology... Although these models are only in the stage of performance, testing, and product introduction, they are concerned by the social community and people and has a high trend of implementation.

According to Prof., Dr. Le Van Chien, Director of the Institute of Leadership and Public Policy, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics: On agriculture, Thai Binh has a lot of space to develop a circular agricultural and low-carbon agriculture economy. And in fact, the province has been implementing many models related to this issue and has had efficiency. To create clean, safe, environmentally friendly agricultural products, aiming to expand export markets and agricultural sector, Thai Binh needs to promote propaganda about the economic benefits and environmental efficiency of circular agricultural production, raise the awareness of people and businesses. And most of all, there is political determination and participation of the entire political system, especially the party committees and grassroots authorities in concretizing the policies and targets of the province. Along with that, the province also needs to have reasonable mechanisms and policies to attract people and businesses operating in the agricultural sector to participate.

The development of a circular agricultural economy is a direction and an opportunity for Thai Binh province to develop quickly and sustainably, not only achieving socio-economic and environmental targets but also helping to cope with climate change which is becoming more and more complicated as it is today. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, Vice Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added: In the coming time, the Department will continue to coordinate with departments and localities to promote propaganda and guidance for farmers and businesses operating in the agricultural sector in the area to unify and raise the people’s awareness about regional linkages to develop circular economic and low-carbon economic ecosystems in agriculture. Advising the province on mechanisms and policies to encourage and attract investment from farmer households and businesses to build some pilot models, thereby developing an ecosystem for circular agricultural, low-carbon agricultural production areas right from the stages of farming, breeding to processing to create an overall closed circle, integrating multi-values.

Along with the solutions above, the province continues to strongly deploy digital transformation technology to serve the implementation of circular economy in agricultural production in accordance with each type of circular economic model of each field; at the same time, build the linkage chains of production and consumption of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, associated with the application of scientific advances, information technology, digital technology... Organizing the advertising and trade promotion for products applied circular agriculture and low-carbon agriculture as well as expanding international relations to research, receive and transfer circular economic and low-carbon economic models suitable to the conditions of the province.
