Thai Binh: From tradition to the present

On March 21, 1890, Governor General of Indochina issued a decree establishing Thai Binh province. The name of Thai Binh is 130 years old now but the land and people of Thai Binh existed there thousands of years ago.

Renovated and developed Thai Binh city.

Remember the beginning time of land acquiring
According to historical documents, Thai Binh land was formed mainly due to the alluvial deposition of two major rivers, the Red River and the Thai Binh River. As a result of the accumulation over tens of thousands of years of sea and wind waves, there are different heights on the surface of Thai Binh area. Land in the north of the province has many mounds. In contrast, many areas in the south are flooded all year round. Historical books describe Ky Bo Hai Khau area (around present-day Thai Binh city) as a desolate place, a swampy land, dense vegetation, often used as a refuge for bandits. However, this fertile land promises a rich settlement life so it also has attraction to many generations of residents from many regions to this land to explore and live.

Initially, the newcomers exploring this land chose the high land to settle, but they also wanted to occupy the flooded areas and the remote coastal strip of stormy waves, therefore, it forced them and their families to consolidate themselves to be able to conduct dyke embankment, water treatment, digging rivers, preventing saline intrusion, washing land, drainage... According to statistics, in Thai Binh currently, besides 5 big natural rivers, namely Red River, Tra Ly River, Luoc River, Diem Ho River, and Hoa River, there are 65 big and small dug rivers, 6 canals built around different areas to form the intermittent river systems serving well the irrigation, drainage and agricultural production. Therefore, Thai Binh land can be considered as a typical land of water treatment and reclamation activities. During the journey from the beginning time, it has been recorded many fierce struggles to conquer nature, to reclaim the land and to conquer the great water of Thai Binh residents. Typically, the land reclamation led by Nguyen Cong Tru, was carried out within 6 months and the new Tien Hai district was established with nearly 19,000 acres of fields and hundreds of kilometers of solid river dykes and sea dykes to prevent floods, salt water, tides, which have demonstrated the courage, hard work, and creativity of Thai Binh people.

With perseverance and courage, generations of Thai Binh residents have transformed a remote, unspoiled, mangrove area into a land of vitality with vast rice fields, mulberry fields, rich villages, crowded people, prosperous things, became "rich people and treasures". The brave heart, not giving in to all difficulties and challenges, has multiplied in generations to become the spirit of courage, a heroic and indomitable tradition of Thai Binh people. From the anti-colonial uprising of the early Han Dynasty to the beginning of the construction of Van Xuan country; resistance against Yuan - Mongol army, contributing to Minh invasion to national independence ... until the struggle against French colonialist, American imperialism..., each historical period of struggle national liberation and defense of the country is all marked with brilliant milestones in the spirit of heroic struggle, passionate patriotism, unyielding to oppression, exploitation and injustice of generations of Thai Binh people.

Continuing the power of "rich people and treasures"

The challenging and difficult survival process has helped Thai Binh people accumulate a wealth of experience in production and labor. In order to adapt to the land that always goes hand in hand with advantages and challenges, Thai Binh people have cleverly managed, turned dangers into conditions, and the quintessence has been inherited and promoted through generations and period. If Thai Binh people have been successful in reclaiming the land, the course of "chasing waves away, pulling the horizon closer" contributes to fighting against the US and recovering the economy after the war, the course of "turning land into gold” from the end of the twentieth century to the present has created a new face and vitality on the young land of Thai Binh.

As an agricultural province, Thai Binh has focused on implementing many major and comprehensive revolutions in agriculture and rural areas. Success from a 5-ton field to 50-million field and a large sample field is a persistent, tireless and creative journey of Thai Binh farmers under the leadership of the provincial Party Committee. Not stop at rice or pigs, farmers in two coastal districts of Thai Thuy, Tien Hai also reach out to the big sea, following their fathers and brothers to conquer the sea on the road to get rich. Thai Binh is not only known as the leading province in agriculture, but also its industry has risen to a higher position in the Red River Delta and the North of Vietnam. From a purely agricultural province, basically "white" in concentrated industry, Thai Binh has established 7 industrial parks and 1 economic zone. The economic structure has shifted in a positive direction, quickly increasing the proportion of industry, construction and services, and reducing the proportion of agriculture. The positive economic restructuring towards industrialization and modernization has brought about spectacular development. In the young land of Thai Binh, where the quintessence of many regions converges, the people show their bravery, resilience, hard-working, creative spirit from the beginning time. These precious traditional values are still preserved and promoted by Thai Binh Party Committee, authorities and people in the renewal process.

The revolutionist Nguyen Van, former Chairman of the provincial Fatherland Front Committee

More than 90 years of age, having lived, fought, worked in my native Thai Binh, witnessed the changes of this land, I feel very proud. When we were still working, if we wanted to go to Con Vanh, we must use canoes, now we have the road. The whole Nam Phu commune was once just a sedge beach, now it has become a busy village, and it also develops tourism and cars appear all the roads. Those are enough to see how much our Thai Binh has changed. The generations have successfully promoted the spirit of opening the land, building up our province on a par with other provinces and cities nationwide. The best thing is that along with economic development, all aspects of our political life and social order and safety remain stable, less negative issues occur. We need to continue promoting to deserve the achievements that our ancestors have bravely exploited and built this land.

Cultural researcher Nguyen Thanh, former Director of Department of Culture and Information

Compared with many other localities in the Red River Delta region and the whole country, Thai Binh province has its own characteristics of natural, socio-economic and population factors. These characteristics have shaped Thai Binh people's personality.

If considering all three factors: nature, economy and population, we can generalize from tradition to the present that Thai Binh province has three "seas": the East Sea, the human sea, the sea of rice. In the historical periods of the nation, the position of these 3 "seas" has been confirmed. The remaining issue now and in the future is how to exploit the potentials and advantages of these 3 "seas" to make Thai Binh soon become a province with modern agriculture and industry, continue to be worthy as Vietnam's "rich people and treasures" in the integration period.
