Thai Binh, tourism development from cultural flows

One day in the first summer of 2019, I returned to Thai Binh with a peaceful mind to understand the changes of the cultural land more clearly, to see the preservation and promotion of the culture here.

Thai Binh was originally an area where wet rice was grown; the province developed by growing rice, so a civilization of rice was formed, deeply ingrained in the mind of every resident here. Setting foot on this land as a tourist, I was really overwhelmed by the endless cultural flow of history.

Thai Binh land does not have magnificent mountains, no majestic scenery like some of other provinces, but the unique culture is a strong vitality that lasts over time with thousand years of history. This is the basis for Thai Binh to strongly develop tourism.

That proud history still imprints today with thousands of monuments, more than two thousand historical and cultural relics, more than 100 nationally ranked monuments that can be considered as massive treasure. It may not appeal to those who like to see natural landscapes, but especially attractive to a travelers who like to explore the culture of life. The special culture of the locality is a unique slice that attracts people in many different ways. A distant tourist coming to Thai Binh often feels surprised, then immersed in the thought of a unique culture in the North.

For ages, Thai Binh province has wanted to take advantage of this strenth to attract tourists, and they have succeeded with a sustainable way of thinking and doing. Cultural experience tourism, or community based tourism, can only develop if visitors really feel the life and emotions of its residents. If the local cultural identity is respected by the local people, this will increase the benefits for the local people.

Indeed, in recent years, Thai Binh has thought a lot and has a roadmap to integrate its culture more deeply, firstly to integrate into the common flow of the country's culture, and gradually integrate with international community. Thai Binh people have joined hands to contribute, together exploit their tourism potentials making it a thrust for the province's economy. Indeed, Thai Binh is a rich and diverse folklore region with hundreds of traditional festivals restored and preserved. That is the foundation and great resource to develop tourism.

I visited Khuoc village, the cradle of Thai Binh “chèo” art and also a unique destination for those who love traditional culture. The unique space here creates a challenge for other people to try to feel the charisma and the quintessence of folk culture. Thai Binh land has produced a lot of human community activities that we can only use two words "extremely beautiful" to describe. The peasants who during daytime have their hands and feet covered in mud to plant  rice, are now transformed into great artists, with soaring vocals that seem to occupy the entire artistic sky. The most interesting thing for visitors like us is at folk games. Even though it is only experienced for a while, those games of sticking and playing chess are very precious memories for people from distant places. That's human nature:  when experiencing other cultures, they are very interested and respectful.

Then there are Thai Binh specialties that are infatuated with people's hearts. Just a piece of cake in the idyllic Nguyen village is enough for visitors to better understand the Thai Binh people's lifestyle, to appreciate the life of the farmers. The whole year is hard, but Thai Binh people always preserve a rich culture, from art to cuisine. Their cultural space is always large, not only to save the tradition but also to educate the young generation. Education from dishes such as cakes to folk games has only been passed down within families. It is truly a unique cultural flow, like a great ddeep – rooted tree spreading throughout history.

The cultural features are simple, rustic, but brilliant like an enchanting water-painting. The passion for visitors is also the rustic but poetic beauty that a distant person can fall in love with making them want to stay longer, want to visit Thai Binh again. It is the simplicity, not luxury that makes people excited to come to Thai Binh. I remember the saying of David, an English tourist when visiting Thai Binh: You can build high quality services, but you cannot create a unique culture like this. That is an interesting thing in the eyes of foreigners when seeing with their own eyes the idyllic life of Thai Binh. Maybe, we just consider it a normal thing, but for tourists, they see it as culture, something to be treasured.

Thai Binh land, Thai Binh people have thousands of years of history and that cultural flow is still flourishing day by day. This is the most valuable capital of Thai Binh generations, and also an immeasurable resource of Thai Binh in tourism development. Using culture to promote and create sources for economic development is no longer a new thing in today's integration era, and it is the same way to improve the value of life for people. The precious capital of Thai Binh not only comes from industry and agriculture, but also constitutes the cultural life and community activities. Folklore and folklore villages in Thai Binh countryside are a valuable human resource, a part to help this beautiful land survive and develop, bringing a bright future to the people of the province that has been famous for high rice productivity.
